Special thanks to B. Wood of the former Valmet Weapons Club for this information below

Since 1969, tritium night sights have been factory installed on Valmet rifles. Winters in Scandinavia are cold and dark. The factory installed night sights are a necessity. Many a Valmet owner has been suprised to learn of the "hidden" night sights on their favorite Model 62 or 76. Don't think that you are the only one that has encountered this "suprise"!

Any tritium sight will decay and eventually go dead. The only way to restore the sights is to have the tritium capsule replaced.

Below is a pic of a typical Valmet sight. The side screw is used to loosen the clamp on the night sight elevation screw. The elevation screw is adjusted either up or down to adjust the elevation of the night sight. To use the night sights, simply lift the rear sight and rotate it forward. Do this gently. If the elevation screw is set low,the top of the rear sight blade may mar the receiver cover.

Model 71 night sights do not have a concealed rear night sight.

On all models of Valmets, the front sight can be rotated to either the day or night sight position.

Removing Valmet Sights

In case you ever decide to refurbish your night sights . . . . here is how to do it!

First step is to rotate the rear site to the upward position

Next step is to fully remove the locking screw on the side of the sightblade.
Gently Nudge the sight blade up from the sight

Partially remove the spring pin. Do Not totally remove the pin.
There is a small leaf spring that is used to provide a positive lockfor the sight blade when up or down.

After the spring pin is partially removed, the front
sight will come out. Tap the pin back in until you reinstall
your refurbished sights. Keeps ya from losing it!

When it comes time to reinstall the sights, use a small pin to lineup the sight blade holes with the sight base holes. This will speedup the reinstall.
